How much is the volunteer fee?

The volunteer fee is $75 a week.

What does the volunteer fee cover?

The volunteer fee covers 3 large meals and a snack every day, clean water, and lodging.

Where do volunteers stay when volunteering for Our Hearts for Africans?

Volunteers stay with a local family in Busembatia, a safe and beautiful town just fifteen minutes away by motorcycle from Our Hearts for Africans School. The director and the secretary of the organization reside at the home with volunteers to ensure that volunteers are always accommodated and cared for. A new volunteer house is currently under construction.

What does a typical day at Our Hearts for Africans look like for volunteers?

Volunteers are fed breakfast every morning before heading off to Our Hearts School with Our Hearts staff. School is in session from 8-2:30 Monday through Friday and volunteers usually spend this time teaching, playing with the children, and helping teachers facilitate physical education. Most school days are followed by an after-school club activity such as chess or debate and where volunteers are welcome to stay and participate. After school, volunteers go back to the house where a delicious lunch is served. After lunch, volunteers are free to do whatever they want. On weekends volunteers are welcome to help out with other projects, relax, or explore Uganda.

What is there to do near Busembatia?

Busembatia is home to a vibrant market exploding with delicious Ugandan staples and of course, culture. Volunteers usually enjoy dancing, playing sports, and walking around the village during their free time. Outside Busembatia, volunteers also enjoy visiting Jinja, one of the biggest and most popular towns in the Peal of Africa. The cultural epicenter is only an hour and a half away from Busembatia. In Jinja, volunteers can visit the source of the Nile River, shop, and explore the flavors of Africa. Going on a safari or taking a scenic hike at one of Uganda’s famous parks is also encouraged.

Who picks volunteers up from Entebbe National Airport?

Paul Kulabako, the executive director and Eve Chagala, the organizational secretary pick- up volunteers from the airport and drive them to the volunteer house.

How safe is this program?

In any foreign country it is good to practice awareness and common sense. That being said, the safety of volunteers is top priority for the staff at Our Hearts for Africans. Uganda is a very safe country for volunteers and many visitors leave Uganda with a desire to come back. Even though Busembatia is an extremely safe and peaceful town, the house in which volunteers stay is guarded by security at night. In addition, volunteers are always accompanied with local staff so that they are never alone and to ensure their safety and wellbeing at all times. (If a group of volunteers want to go exploring without staff, that is okay too)

How long can I volunteer with the organization?

Volunteers are encouraged to stay for at least a week and are welcome to volunteer with the organization for up to a year.

As a volunteer, what can I donate to the village of Bunio upon arrival?

Volunteers are not expected or required to bring supplies to Uganda, however they may bring items to donate if they wish. Some of these items might include soap, school supplies, reusable pads, clothes, toys, seeds, and books.
